Well first you need to back everything up or consider that Win 2000 install expendable, cause if you miss one step yer toast...

First you will need to re-partition yer drive. I have had good luck with Partition Magic. You could also use fdisk (from DOS boot floppy), but I would NOT recommend that. fdisk sucks.

You will need to create 2 partition magic boot floppies (if you run PM in win2000 it will explain this...).

Then RESIZE your Win2000 partition so that half the drive is empty. Create a PRIMARY partition on the other half. You don't need to format it now, Red hat installer will do that. Now get the newest Redhat (7.2). You will be glad you did because 7.0 is buggy as hell and does not have Ext3 support and a lot of other cool stuff.

Now just boot off the Red Hat CDs and make sure you choose the right partition to install in. Probably is will be /dev/hda5 or something- probably NOT /dev/hda1 as this is your windows 200 partition! The installer should work OK with yer new system. Finally, you will need to configure your boot loader. You will get the GRUB boot loader by default with 7.2, so you'll have to read up on booting Windows 2000 with GRUB as this is a brand new boot loader. Or you can use LILO if you choose it during the install, there is a lot of documentation on this out there... This last part will be difficult and your Win2000 partition will not be bootable until you figure it out... Good luck

First, keep lilo (or grub) out of the mbr. It is safer and booting with lilo doesn't make sense if you will be using windows more often than linux.

Follow the steps on the link below and you should have no problems, once you get your partitions set.

Hi guys,

Hope that you guys are doing fine. I'm a newbie to LINUX. I've installed linux on my win98 system. and i have no problems booting either of them..but the only thing is that I can only run LINUX in dos Mode..

my question is what should be learnt first in order to start with Linux..I should tell u that I know the basics, like the basic commands like ls, man, rm, mv, chmod and so on and so forth....

I'll be glad if someone gives me a start...

thanks in advace..

truly yours
Ahmad

I have Windows 98 on my Master HD, and I
changed an old Master (now secondary) to
use Linux. I Still have a version of
Windows 2000 installed on the secondary HD
with some usefull stuff on it. Is it
possible to boot to Win 2000 without using
Grub's method of "virtual swap" using the
"map" command?

BTW Redhat boots from the secondary HD no
problem
