i tried to install ubuntu on it but it didnt work and froze at a screen. i want to try different linux versions but dont know which are good. any suggestions??

you don't have to install it, just boot off the linux CD of your choice & take it for a test drive. List your system specs.
IMO, Linux Mint 5.0 is one of the best distros available right now. It's based on Ubuntu but has a more "windows-like" feel. SimplyMEPIS is also good - I believe it's based on Debian (Ubuntu is also based on Debian). PCLinuxOS is another good choice or it's offshoot, SAM Linux.

For a list of live cd's. Ones that I normally run from a virtual machine instead of burning a cd see here. http://www.frozentech.com/content/l...
"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10
