If you are a newbie I would suggest either (elx linux or redmond linux) both of these are very easy to use and configure.

I bought my first Linux system recently, it is SuSE 7.3, and I love it. Very easy to use, and set up.

Mandrake is very good, version 8.2 is coming out soon, i have 8.1. It is still a geeky distro and will install a lot of apps... as raoleo pointed out ELX linux or Desktop/LX (previously known as redmond linux)are more suited for newbies but are fairly new and may have some problems, although i suspect they both have very easy ways of updating the system automagically.

Ok, I was thinking SuSE would be a good one, I've read reviews and went to their website once. Thanks, I'll check them out.

Well. I've played with Linux of and on for the last few years. If you want a no grief install, where all your hardware is autoconfigured, where you come up on the first boot with Internet access and X Windows, Then ya just gotta have Red Hat 7.1 or 7.2
All opions are relative!

I say Redhat 7.1 or 7.2 for a rock solid machine. If you need a good GUI for after your install, Mandrake's Drakconf is really nice if you are not comfortable at the command line.
