Hey all:
I'm trying to figure out which linux to install. there are so many different types. Mandrake, redhat., Can someone give me suggestion. and please also let me know which is easier to work with(hardware installation etc). and where can i get the version from.

I recommend Bonzai Linux. It is a small (~180MB) ISO CD image download and on a high-speed connection takes little time. It is a port of Debian which includes a tiny set of applications.
If you have trouble with installing, a driver or something else, you can just post a message here. Debian is a well-established distribution of Linux and this is why I recommend it.

I strongly recommend SuSE for beginners. Its nice and has GUI based Installer. Its stable, not like Mandrake and RedHat (Fedora) which notorious (lately) to include unstable and buggy apps.
Well, before you install Linux, you should get know a little bit of it. Try Knoppix ( http://www.knoppix.org/ ). Its live CD, means you dont need to install, just pop the CD in and you are ready to go!

As suggested above try out knoppix first.
I'm using Fedora Core 2 with no stability issues.
However there is a problem with the graphical update agent (up2date) on the system tray. An alternative is to use "yum" or apt-get. For yum: Use the commands "su" "yum check-update" and then "yum update" for updates you should have no problems.

You can get a breakdown of the many
distributions of GNU/Linux at
www.distrowatch.com and download most of
them free from www.linuxiso.org

If you pick Suse, get the professional edition. The personal edition doesn't have Gnome. While the loss of that GUI may not be an issue, there are many applications that depend on Gnome libraries and applications to run.
Personally I prefer Mandrake, but that's not a negative judgment on the others. I have Mandrake Fedora, and Suse installed on my various boxes, and they all work pretty damned well, with the exception of a screwy sound driver in Fedora (I understand others have seen this as well).

Atif, looking at your email address I think you're from New Delhi.
Theres only one distributor I could find in delhi - in Janakpuri which sells all kinds of UNIX-like systems on CD. I forgot the address though, I'll try to remember.
You can get both Fedora and Mandrake from Nehru Place market.
But if you have a "free" net connection you should install either Debian GNU/Linux or FreeBSD (not linux based). Both of them are very easy to upgrade and maintain.
Most systems can be configured to do almost anything - desktop or not.
There are 10 kinds of people, those who count in binary and those who don't.
