I have a 486 laptop with about 12MB RAM and a very small hard drive. I was wondering if I would be able to setup a small web page and small (3-5 user) email server using this. I have a DSL connection. If this is possible, which linux could I use. If it is not, I would still like to use this computer, so which distribution would run best on this? (Phat, older RH, mandrake, corel, best, mayb BeOS?) ....I realize x-windows is out of the question.

what you install depends on the size of your hard drive. X is only out of the question if you need the space for large amounts of user files (an email server would qualify). Because Linux is Linux, any and all of those you listed will work with varying degrees of tinkering on your part. Slackware is setup to be a server by default (including IP Masquerading already installed). Red Hat is setup to be a user system by default, you need to compile in some of the server elements. If you don't have the software you want, you have DSL. Why worry?

Since you have limited hard drive space, I'd look into Debian. you can download the base system which is ~20 mb, and then customize your system by downloading task packages (like x window system).
