Ubuntu Server ... free debian based linux distro

Ubuntu Dapper Drake is my favorite. FreeBSD is good also.

There's no place like 127.0.0.1

Redhat, that is what I learned on at work. This includes RedHat Enterprise Linux 3.0, 4.0, Fedora (originally was started by the RedHat group) and CentOS 3.0 and 4.0 (free) which are derived from Redhat Enterprise Linux source code.

The best way to choose is to download and burn some live CDs and see what you prefer.

Kanotix and Ubuntu are good distros, and the Kanotix CD has many more included apps than the Ubuntu, though you can apt-get all you like for either.
