Which distro should I use

I would use Red Hat simply because it is easy to install and use. You could also try Mandrake Linux it works really great to. Each of these disto has a hardware compatibilty page on their homepages so I would check that out about your hardware.

It's really a matter of personal preference. My choice would be MEPIS. You could down load it and run it as a live CD to find out if it works with your hardware.

I have used a number of USB mass storage devices under GNU/Linux (memory sticks, digital cameras etc) and have only come across one thumb drive that I coudn't use. All I could see on it was a small partition containing what looked like windoze drivers for accessing the rest of the drive. All the others just mounted fine without the need for additional drivers or software.
