I myself use FreeBSD (www.freebsd.org) its just a personal preference, i moved from Slackware Linux that i used for over a year, on a server.
preference on an operating system really depends on what you are wanting to do with it, if you want to use it as a personal pc at home, go with a major distro, Mandrake Redhat Suse Slackware, they are all good.

Reply: (edit)If you go to the RedHat website, and move to product-> download you can get a list of mirror sites to download RedHat from besides the main FTP site (which can be very busy at times). It is really a matter of personal preference, but for people newer to linux, I recommend using Mandrake Linux (current version is 8.2) which can be found at www.mandrake-linux.com, and probably RedHat 7.2 for advanced set-ups. I personally haven't had a whole lot of experience with the other distributions, but a lot of people work really hard to make them all really nice, and finding one you like is probably like finding a favorite food, you may just have to try the different flavors before you choose the one you like. Reply: (edit)Check out www.linuxiso.org. They've got many of the popular distros to choose. You can download full ISO images with which you can burn to cd. I suggest you get some download manager like GoZilla or something that can retry partial downloads before you start downloading. -- D Nutt
