hi everyone...does anyone know where to get a copy of slurpie for red hat 8. the jps.net page seems to be down and has been down for a long time. are there any mirrors? what happneed to jps?

i did retrieve a copy from:
http://www.multimania.com/toopert/slurpie.tgz

it seems to untar and make successfully giving me my slurp and slurpie. but when i run it with the command:
./slurpie -v -g a7? 6 9 /etc/shadow

i get this exact output:
connecting to: 127.0.0.1 15001: successful.
1 nodes connected.
cracking: root $1$spR5.Q3D8GYBW9rlsi5Rs3rh9
error: server timed out. exiting.

any ideas why my server times out? i thought maybe i had the port bloacked but i don't think i have any firewall running, and it seems to connect anyways. any feed back would be highly appreciated. thanks and take care

just an addition. could the reason it times out is because i do not include a dictionary file? where would i find dictionary files? isn't the dictionary file just an extra option...if no file it does brute force only? thanks again.

Humm I'm not familiar with slurpie. Apparently it is a brute forcer that runs locally. Well as to where to get a dictionary file that's easy. You don't get a dictionary file. You get a program that is capable of generating the dictionary file. You may fine these programs from several sources on the Internet. As for bruteforceing mode using slurpie I cannot comment on how it is done or if it is possible to do.
If you would like to root your own system there are other programs capable of doing this without the need for brute forcing. Try doing more research on the subject. The first thing you should know about the subject of system security is that in order to learn you must study.
If you ever want to be flamed by people who know about system security all you have to do is ask dumb uninformed questions like "How do I hack XXXX web server" or "Can you tell me how to deface yahoo.com"
Here is the thing mate. If you want to know things about how to root a system then read about it. Do not post questions to a support forum asking how to root your own system because we all know that you don't really want to root your own system your trying to root someone else’s system. So don't waste our time this server’s bandwidth and space on its drive trying to fool us into helping you perform illegal activities.

grindel. sorry you took the post like that...maybe it should have been in the security section.

actually...i am trying to root my own system...more specifically, simply test password strength against three programs. slurpie, crack, and john the ripper. this is for an internet security class i am currently taking.

while studying up on these three tools i read about the power of slurpie's distributed option. i wanted to try it out, but like my post says my server times out. i did do what i thought was an adequate search for this subject...and came up with nothing other then old posts that no longer existed, or jps.net links that no longer were serviced. i reverted to computing.net because many people, whome are much more intelligent then i, read this sight. i thought it a place for a quick and simple anwser.

sorry to waste your bandwidth.

to see a more detailed post from myself on the same subject that was never responded to, view this link:

thanks again for your response and sorry for the detour of subject.
