A good Linux to try for a first timer is Mandrake Linux at www.mandrake.com it has a excellent installer and the main install disk has a large host of programs included. You will need to download the iso file which is about 640 megs........and burn it to a cd with a program like ez cdcreator or any program that handles the iso format. If your computer can boot from a cd just set your motherboard to boot from a cd and let it go. If you cant boot from a cd you will have to create a boot floppy from the mandrake cd and boot the floppy with the cd in your cdrom drive. It should see your hardware....after you get it intalled thats when the fun starts.

You can download Redhat Linux from UNC. The address is metalab.unc.edu I just downloaded it yesterday and installed Redhat 6.2 on my Sparc. They are almost always up to date on the patched and updates that you will need. Try that one out.

ftp.cdrom.com mirrors several distributions of Linux (Slackware mainly, but also RedHat, Debian and others) Allows anonymous ftp, too.

I can vouch for Mandrake Linux. I am an absolute newby w/ linux and found it to be very easy to get going. It is almost 1 GIG to download though. Worth it. My god I have a lot to learn!
