WHAT'S UP WITH LINUX AND ALL THIS COMPLICATIONS?

This is the umpteenth time i'm installing madrake 7.2 on my system . I come to narrow my problem down to one thing. I have linux properly installed on my system now (no doubt about that), but the only problem is this freaking X-WINDOW. each time I try to set it up, it keeps giving me an error screen. I'm now at a dead end, and each time I try making adjustment I keep going back through the same cycle over and over again with the error screen as the dead end.
What do you think ? I gues the problem might be my monitor. I have a cheap ass non-brand name 19inch monitor (known as EMC). I tried using the specifications that came in the cheap ass manual, but they don't seem to work. I've tried as many resolutions and refresh rates as I could, (besides the one in the manual) but they all still don't seem to work. I don't think the problem is from my video card 'cos I have an ATI all-in wonder and mandrake does a good job of probing and giving me the right card and even the right video memory.

The error always says something like this:
"screen not found", and all that crap.
The x-server being used by mandrake is "Mach-64".

Could anyone help me out with what to do with the cheap-ass freaking monitor? I would really appreciate any help of any kind.

thanks
opid

Check it out man..

All I can tell you is the same thing happened to me.Except it was red hat 6.1
Something about "screen not found" Finalley
I got a copy of 6.1 frome another scorce
and it worked.I have no Idea why. I also
noticed that linux is pickey about the disc
having fingerprints on it.
I doent know If the disk is the problem but if you know someone who has another copy or verson might be worth a try..

good luck ..mark

install linux without the default being "automatically start xwindows".

type "startx" to try it.
Copy the error message to a floppy or to another computer, and show us the message.

The monitor shouldn't be causing problems. If you can run a graphical X configurator, which uses 640x480 at 16 colors, you shouldn't find any problems running X, because X should already be running. But if I'm wrong, you might want to borrow Boguy's monitor. It seems to work okay.
