Anybody correct me if I'm wrong. Not overly knowledgeable on architecture but isn't apple going to run into problems with most newer distro's having a low end P2? I was under the impression that i386 was 386 or above and i586 was P3 and above......

Pretty much any distribution will "work". As far as newbie-friendly ones go, I'd feel comfortable recommending Mandrake or Red Hat.
Personally I think Slackware's about the worst place a newbie could start.

No way...Slackware is an excellent place to start. At some point you have to learn how to configure everything manually. I started with Slackware and I have never looked back. I really made me do a lot of learning.

It's true that it does make you do a lot of learning, but it's not a safe assumption to make that that's what the user is looking for in a distribution.
For what it's worth, I started on Slackware. I did learn a fair bit from it, but it did almost nothing for me as a distribution. It's more or less a tarball that when extracted and twiddled happens to boot up.
Since the original poster has not clarified any more than "work for me", I don't know if it's worth arguing over whether Slackware is right for him/her.

Yea, I'd agree..... Man, I really don't want to turn this into another distro debate but I would really consider Mandrake first. It's Xp with a terminal window. Then Redhat. Then maybe SuSE and then Slackware. I think Slackware is probably the best overall, but man...... For a newbie/windows user.... Don't start with Slackware unless you have more than a couple marbles in the bag, if you know what I mean.... And we might as well all face it..... Coming off windows, you are a complete moron for the most part.... I went thru my phase for about 6 months or more and then it all started to come together..... The clouds broke and I was bathed in a glorious swath of light... I think I even heard angels sing....You have to work your way up to the better distro's generally..... Ole' Bill really turns your brain into a steaming pile of sh*it..... For some people that may not hold true, but for the mojority of people out there, you will wind up so damn frustrated unless you go the easy route.... Up to you.... I love slackware but I had an awfull hard time on Redhat when I first started out, much less Slackware.......... You will appreciate Slackware once you use other distro's for 6 months to a year or more...... Just my opinion.....

Mandrake came with great documentation to get me started. But I think now I'd recommend Lycoris to a first-time user.

I used windoze for about a year. So I wasnt deep into bills world. I would recommend that you buy one of the RedHat Bibles they come with the disto and alot of info from starter level to advanced. There is a lot of documentation on RedHat. I went to the book store and bought books and read on GNU/Linux for about 3 months before I started using it. I thought it was way easier than I had been lead to believe. For starters I say RedHat or mandrake.RedHat is bloated. So you may want to do a minumil install.
Good Luck
Ron
