I am looking to get a book about Linux that explains how to do just about everything! espically the parts about first time users!

I havnt used Linux that much so something like a beginners book would be useful!!! I dont mind how big the book is as i have plenty of time at work to read it.

Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks!

RUTE is my choice. The name is an acronym
for Rute Unix Tutorial and Exposition. This
document comes included with many Linux
distributions, or the latest release can be
downloaded here

At this WEB site you can view the document
online, or if you prefer, you can download
the document in your choice of html or pdf
format. If you get the pdf document, you can
then print it if you choose, but be aware
that this document consists of 660 pages.

RUTE is intended for new users. The preface from the book is as follows:

Preface

When I began working with GNU/LINUX in 1994, it was straight from the DOS world. Though UNIX was unfamiliar territory, LINUX books assumed that anyone using LINUX was migrating from System V or BSD--systems that I had never heard of. It is a sensible adage to create, for others to share, the recipe that you would most like to have had. Indeed, I am not convinced that a single unifying text exists, even now, without this book. Even so, I give it to you desperately incomplete; but there is only so much one can explain in a single volume.

I hope that readers will now have a single text to guide them through all facets of GNU/LINUX.

You should also find lots of documentation including loads of HOWTOs under /usr/share/doc/

www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project) is a great source for learning as are the man and info pages included with just about every distro, just man command for a command/config file's manual page. Apropos also finds commands related to a subject, eg "apropos network"
