I assume you mean NAT - Network Address Translation or Masquerading in the linux world. With NAT/MASQ you can connect a local subnet (eg. 192.168.) to another net (usually w3) via a routing machine, doing address translation. You might also find this useful when connecting to host systems via Dial-Up, etc.
