I assume you mean NAT - Network Address Translation or Masquerading in the linux world.
With NAT/MASQ you can connect a local subnet (eg. 192.168.) to another net (usually w3) via a routing machine, doing address translation.
You might also find this useful when connecting to host systems via Dial-Up, etc.

Allows several machines to use the same IP
address and so share a connection . Usually
used to share an ISDN , T1 , ADSL or dial up
connection to an ISP . Most OSs have a
version of it for instance Win98SE ICS is a
NAT router .
