"What is Linux Good for" that is not my question, I just used that subject so a lot of people will read this. I need to know very badly if the ATi Radeon 7500 has support for dri under Fedora Core 1. Please don't guess, it is critical that I know the awnser to this question before December 24, 2003.

lol,
I think the card is supported but I'm not sure. A search on google revealed some people are using it with DRI under linux. Does the 7500 have any other versions? I think it was ati all-in-wonder 7500.
Why don't you try googling for info yourself? Search something like "redhat radeon 7500 dri" and look through all the results yourself?
By the way, I think redhat's list of "supported hardware" should tell you if its offically supported. If not then look around for untested code...

A link to the SuSe hardware database:

Look for your card; You will see that it's supported from version 8.0 and higher for i386 platforms. They also mention the name of the needed package and driver.

Specifically for Fedora, see if they have included these drivers and packages.

Also don't forget to write an email to the manufacturer of your card, asking if it's supported under linux. (although I doubt they know what Fedora is, I must say that answers these days can be highly amusing.).

Let a manufacter work for his money; a windows user gets "free" CD's with applications when buying hardware, why shouldn't we get something else from a bargain; like a little bit of email support? Just be friendly... The answers I receive from emails to hardware sellers / manufacturers are taken into consideration when I buy something.

In my opinion if something is supported under linux distro A it should be possible to get it supported under linux distro B. Sometimes it's a hassle and sometimes it is not.

You could check the drivers status at www.xfree86.org as this program is used by a lot of linux distro's.

yup, I agree w/ guido. Write to ati, start off your letter with "I'm thinking of buying an ati card". That is sure to make them respond to you properly.

Doesn't Red Hat have a hardware compatiblity list on their web site?

Of course, it does and so does any other linux distro out there! Somehow, some people are just too damn lazy to look around first before posting a message when they can't find an answer right away...
