Linux is a modification of the mainframe operating system Unix.
created in the late 1980's is very powerful and stable.
Current releases like Redhat and Mandrake are very easy to install on almost any home computer.
If you ever used DOS, especially if you are familiar with using it, you will be comfortable using Linux. Although today, many GUI applications are available, and even rival Windows for ease of use.
It runs almost all web servers today(including Microsofts) and is used in many critial systems. It can run anything from a large server down to a wrist watch.
Unlike Windows systems, Linux can run without system crashes or restarts for weeks, or even months at a stretch.

Linux was NOT a hack of UNIX, it was originally a hack/modification of MINIX. An other 'linux' distributions are called linux because they are using the linux kernel, the only true part of linux.

Linux is another operating system. It's an alternative to windows. It is very much oriented towards power users, network administrators and web developers. Not all hardware available is supported under linux. There are several distributions available on the web. If you wish to download one, go to linuxiso.org .
