I have never used anything else but DOS and Windows, but I wanna try Linux out? Which distribution is best for a Linux-beginner, but an experienced computer user?

Hi, Great news are when someone wants to try Linux!
Red Hat is good choice for beginners and advanced users as well.
You can download it for free or pay about $34.99 for the boxed distro (includes CDs, DVD, docs and email/online support). I recommend you download the 3 CD ISOs if you've got DSL or cable (downloading with a 56kbps modem will take about 4 days). Having a CD burner is highly recommended. Don't download it from ftp.redhat.com, choose a mirror (such as UCLA) it will go faster. At www.redhat.com you can read docs for free.
You can also just buy a book about Red Hat Linux 8.0. Most books includes RHL. You can get one for about $30.00.

Going against the grain. I'd pick a debian based distro, package management is great. Knoppix will boot of a cd so you can try it without actually installing it on the hdd.

For a first time user, i would suggest forking out the £30 or so for a boxed distro as it will come with a nice book and you'll be supporting the community.
Once you've got that, just download the ISOs from the net in the future as the basics stay pretty much the same (I still refer back to my SuSE 5 book from time to time).
A nice link for you to read up on all the different flavours available: www.distrowatch.com
