Distros are based on how you wish to use the box. Applications, security and connection options play a big part of the choice as well as the age of the equipment.

Puppy is a lightweight version for older slower system as a desktop replacement.

Almost every big distro offer a live floppy, cd/dvd option. Options range from command line on some of the very oldest PC's and oddball devices to some of the most flashy modern glitz on the fastest machines.

Gentoo offers a total immersion in linux. You get to "build" your system. It might take days but if you follow the instructions you will know what is what in a week or two.

If you have time I'd suggest Gentoo. If you don't have time then consider looking at the distrowatch lists or live cd list at frozen tech.

As aways there are other choices. BeOS/Zeta or QNX might be an option.

Personally I'd use at least some portion for BeOS. BeOS can reside on almost any partiton at any point in the drive so you don't have to load it first.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Here's the link to distrowatch that jefro told you about http://distrowatch.com -- good advice. You can get the low-down on many many distros there. My personal favorite is Simply Mepis (http://www.mepis.org). Mepis offers great functionality out of the box and is easily upgradeable via synaptic. There are also "lite" versions in both 3.3x and 3.4x. Gentoo, as jefro says, it also a great distro as is Slackware. Puppy Linux, as you probably already know, puts out several different versions: "Chubby" being one of my favorite. There are hundreds of distros out there but, like the man said, distrowatch is a good place to start looking. Enjoy the Search!
