Comment:
I run Slackware 8.1 and when I startx, my resolution is too low (I think 640x480). I read some other posts on how to solve this. I tried using xf86setup (a graphical x windows setup) and even xf86Config (the text based setup) and even tried manually set the resolution, setting the Modes in /etc/X11/XF86Config. But none of these have had an effect on my resolution. Also, ctrl-alt-+/- changes the resolution, but makes the resolution even worse. Any ideas at this point would be awesome. Thanks.

You should keep trying until you get the correct resolution settings fixed for your video and monitor.
Make sure to have at hand this info from the booklet that came with your monitor and from the booklet that should've came with your motherboard specifying the type, model, amount of RAM and driver type for the VGA adapter.
If you don't have them you may visit the vendor's web site for the correct specs.
When not autodetected during setup, there is no other way to do this except for to keep trying until you get it right when using tools such as XF86Config/xf86setup.
