I previously had a 486 pc running a web server running windows 95 with abyss web server, it was running perfectly, only that it needed a restart every 3-4 times a week.

I would like to change it to linux, but i dont know which linux to install and which web server to use.

it is networked by a hub to 2 other computers both running win XP and the 486 web server also hosts the cable internet connection

Any help please!?
Thanks

Use Redhat 5.2 (requires 8 Meg RAM). It comes with the Apache web server. Anything newer (Redhat 6+ and equivalent) is going to be very slow running on this 486 machine and may need to have the entire distribution recompiled as many newer distros come precompiled for a Pentium or higher processor.

If Redhat 5.2 (came out in 1998, by the way) doesn't suit your fancy, then I'd recommend updating that old 486 (by scrapping it and getting a new PC) and installing at least Redhat 7 (or equivalent). The later versions of Redhat come with the Apache web server, as well.

Also, I don't know whether Redhat 5.2 is going to be compatible with your cable internet connection. Technically, it should be, but I can't say for certain.

Good luck.

Most distros come with a GUI, although you
don't need to install/run it. During setup,
you will be prompted for the type of system
you want, eg server, graphical workstation
etc...just don't select any of the
graphical bits or anything refering to X.
