warning input signal out of range

OS: red hat 7.2
CPU/Ram: hp vectra ve

i've installed red hat 7.2 for the first time from my dummies guide to linux book

its all ok right up until the login prompt for my username, then the monitor goes black and says:

warning input signal out of range

what is going on and how can i fix it?

Sounds like your monitor is set up incorrectly. If it goes "out of range" and stays like that, your VGA card is set up right but it is outputting at a frequency your monitor cannot handle. Either drop the resolution down or try a different monitor type.
