Comment:

ok, got a xp/fedora dual boot box 700mhz/192mb. Fedora works great when i boot into it but with boot loader, when i use vmware 5.0 to start it however i get what i think is a memory access error. its like (can not find 0000x070xxxxxx) something like that. then it will continue to run, but very slowly. i was thinking it couldnt find a ram address and it uses swap so its super slow. I need someone to tell me if thats right, and of course suggestions on how to fix it. BTW vmware only allows me to give fedora 64mb shared. Any help at all would be great. I'm trying to learn linux and this is my first time working with vmware so bear with me. THANKS E-mail prefered

At the boot prompt try typing the following:
linux mem=64M
If that still doesn't work you could try something along the lines of:
linux mem=exactmap mem=0x9f000@0 mem=0x3f00000@0x100000
(NB all on one line)

Also, I suggest you not use vmware until you get some more memory. XP and Fedora will work (though not as efficiently as could be) on their own with 192 meg, but 64 meg for Fedora is really not going to work very well (as is your experience), not to mention the fact that a virtual machine in vmware won't be running at 100% of native speed anyway, due to it running on top of another operating system.

As to only being allowed to use 64 meg for Fedora, I haven't used Workstation 5, but in the prior versions I've used (Linux host), it was the default to only allow up to 50% of installed memory for currently running guest operating systems. You might look for a setting to allow you to turn that off, but it may adversely affect performance.

To use less memory in Fedora, consider not loading services (daemons) that you aren't using. Load "system-config-services" (gui version) or "ntsysv" and uncheck anything you aren't using. Another suggestion would be to change from Gnome to XFCE by entering "switchdesk xfce" at a command prompt.

If you are serious about running vmware, at least double your memory and try again, giving Fedora considerably more than 64 Meg (closer to 256 meg, which is the minimum recommended for a gui installation).

I run vmware with a gig of memory and guest operating systems run quite well.

Good luck.

I agree that memory could be a problem.

I am running FC3 under VMWare 4.5.2 (XP/Pro Host)with no problems.

But I have 1.5G physical, and have assigned 256M to the FC3 virtual machine.
