"Improving Sound Performance
If you notice that sound skips in your guest operating system, you may try adding two variables to your virtual machine's configuration file (.vmx on Windows hosts, .cfg on Linux hosts). These variables are sound.maxLength and sound.smallBlockSize.
VMware cannot provide you with specific settings to use; how these settings affect your sound quality depends on many factors, including your environment and the way you are employing sound. But here are some general rules of thumb to use when setting these variables:
* Set these values to powers of 2, such as 64, 128 or 512.
* To overcome skipping, setting these values lower than 512 should help.
* The sound.maxLength setting should be greater than or equal to the sound.smallBlockSize setting.'
Where is the Config file in linux????

"....vmx on Windows hosts, .cfg on Linux hosts..."
I think that is the wrong way round. You should find your vmx configuration file together with wherever your virtual hard drive, nvram etc are kept. What version of vmware are you running? If you start it up it should say what config file is being used towards the top.

my guest os is windows 2000....i think i found the file it is with nvram is it "Windows 2000 Pro.vmx" but i do not see a "sound.maxLength setting" in the file....i checked all the other files in the dir and none of them have the line "sound.maxLength setting". Does any have anymore suggestions to fix crackleing sound issue with w2k as a guest os on ubuntu?

"...you may try adding two variables..."
You've answered your own question in the first post. Add those two lines to the config file and see if it helps.
