Hi everyone. I recently upgraded to Vmware 4.5.2 running on a Windows 2000 Pro Host...I know I know it is the work computer. I had installed SUSE 9.1 as the guest, and it was ocnfigured and running fine. Then, after updating with YaST, on a reboot, the xserver no longer starts. You can log in, but Run Level 5 will not start. If I type startx I get:

fatal server error:
no screen found

On reboot, the message given explaining why x doesn't start is:

Starting service kdm
Master Resource Control: runlevel 5 has been reached
Skipped Services in runlevel 5:

I have read this exact error on other forumns about the nvidia drivers and cards, however found nothing about this for vmware. in the XF86Config, the monitor and driver are both set to "vmware". The nvidia solution seems to involve recompiling the kernel. Would there be a similar solution for this vmware driver and monitor, and if so, how exactly would i do that.

Some backgroud Guest specs.

Suse 9.1
Kernel 2.6.4-52
Vmware 4.5.2

8 Gig Virtual Disk
512 Virtual Ram
1.7 Pentium M

Platform:
Windows 2000 Pro
Laptop

Hope someone has something, and I will keep searching and update if I fix it. Thanks a ton and take care!!!

HippieJoe

What errors do you get if you type startx?
Check /var/log/XFree86.0.log afterwards for
any further clues.
