There is a nice little utility called SuperProbe.
/usr/X11R6/bin/SuperProbe
If your unsure of it,
man SuperProbe
Works great (caution, it works most the time for me. But I've had cases where its caused problems. But thats generally bin on a video card that is brand new. It didnot hurt the card, but it messed up my video on a box)
