I've just installedVector on this old laptop for a friend of mine. Everything works fine except for the video. It looks great but it is running in a small box inside the main window. I can't get the image to go fullscreen and X won't let me expand the resolution from 640x.

Any suggestions?

What video player are you using? Try changing the video output to use xv, sdl or another that supports scaling.

I think I didn't explain myself well the first time. I'm not speaking of video files, I mean the actual screen. the desktop itself runs in a small box surounded by black on the laptop screen. When I go to the video settings menu, I have no option to enlarge the resolution past 640x480.

So your desktop is not running at your laptop displays native resolution? Either re-configure X to allow for resolutions higher than 640x480 (1024x768 is probably a good one to try) or enter the laptops BIOS and set the screen to stretch when needed.
