to start this off i am a linux noob so even obvious advice would be helpful. The problem is that different video files in different formats (i.e. mpeg, wmv, etc) occasionally play on VLC and MPlayer or either do not display on VLC or crash MPlayer. My audio files play fine using amarok so i doubt that it is my sound card. It may be important to note that I only recently managed to get the video driver for my NVidia geforce 4 MX 440 working after whole lot of trouble by following method 2) on this website http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=75074
If you need any more information please tell me and if anyone could point me in the right direction i would be extremely grateful because i am at quite a loss seeing as the video does occasionally work but not always/

I have had troubles with a GeForce MX and
AGP. The way around it I found was to use
the "NvAGP" option in your
XF86Config/xorg.conf file.

Edit the file, go the the "Device" section
and add a line:
Option "NvAGP" "0"
[re]start your X server and see if that
helps with the crashing. You can experiment
with different values:
0=disable AGP
1=use NVIDIA's internal AGP support, if
possible
2=use AGPGART, if possible
3=use any AGP support (try AGPGART, then
NVIDIA's AGP)

Yes...the file should be called xorg.conf or
XF86Config(-4) depending on whether you are
running Xorg or XFree86.
