Comment: My RedHat 7.1 does not support vfat filesystem. Discovered this while trying to access Win 98. This is surprising because I could access my Windows 9x partitions nicely during earlier installs of RH 7.1. Also tried to access my Caldera OpenLinux from RedHat. Am getting a message that says, "Cannot get magic numbers for /dev/hda7". What is this bit? Another problem is kppp daemon dies after dialling gets over. How does one overcome this and connect? Thanx in advance.

Reply: (edit)Oh yes, it does!!! I didn't have any problem accessing my Win98 under RedHat Linux 7.1 and when I upgrade to 7.2, still don't have problem, either. Exactly how did you try to mount your Win98 anyway? Lawrence

Reply: (edit)Lawrence, I created a row in /etc/fstab the usual way. It read something like this: /dev/hdb1 /mnt/dos vfat defaults 0 0 Earlier, it worked even with 'auto' instead of 'vfat'. It's only now that I am told vfat isn't supported. Any clues about the kppp daemon perishing?

Reply: (edit)I don't really understand your last message! You say that RedHat Linux 7.1 was able to mount vfat before but now it doesn't support vfat! Again, I don't have any problem reading my Win98 which is a vfat and furthermore, I even able to mount my external SCSI drive which is also a vfat that I share with WinXP, no problem whatsoever. Regarding kppp. I am using DSL so can't help you there. However, if you go to www.linux.org and click on the HOWTO section on the left, there should be a chapter regarding PPP. Lawrence
