I'm a total n00b to linux (like I've used it at school, but never had it on my own PCs), and I'm wondering where I can download it for free. They say you can, but on the website:
http://www.linux.org/dist/download_info.html
there's no link or mirror link to it directly! It just says that I need to buy a book that has it, or order a cd of it. Now that's not free at all! And it's certainly not online.
Please, I need help here.
Thanks."WICKED SICK"

Go to http://distrowatch.com/ and look at the Page Hit Ranking column on the right-hand side of the page. Each distro listed has a link that will take you to a separate page that includes download mirrors where you can download the .iso files you need.

even noobs should have enough skills to navigate web pages.
On www.linux.org, I clicked 'Download' which brought me to a page which, in the 1st paragraph contains:
'Most "versions" of Linux, known as "distributions"'; and in the 2nd paragraph: "so please consult our list of Live CD distributions on our distributions page".Clicking on "distributions" or "distributions page" brings up a topnotch distributions-selection form

The suggestion to buy a book or ordering a CD is not to force you to spend money, but to save time. A big distro can span 3 or more CD's. It takes over 3 hours on my DSL do download each plus time to burn each. It is often a lot faster to get a copy from the CD often included with a magazine at the book store. If you want to - download it. There are mirror sites all over, some with many distros, some archives of older versions of the same distro. Another place to get a copy would be the local Linux users group.

buying a book with a Linux CD is less likely to yield the latest distro.
ordering books/cd is typically 5 business days.
when I download multiple ISOs, i will usually start later in the evening, initiate the (multiple) downloads and leave the computer on overnight. This works most of the time.
For low cost recent distro CDs, check

Try Ubuntu - it's guaranteed free from:

Thank you all for your followups. I really don't want to order a CD because I want to go the route they advertise: free! I'm going for the ISO way, but I'm wondering if Roxio supports making CDs the ISO way... Do you guys know?
Also, is Ubuntu really the best? I've never heard of it...thanks again.
"I get it. You must be ready to die."

Ubunutu will ship out CDs to you for free...anywhere in the world! OK, they take a while to arrive but why not order some from their site now. Don't order just one, get at least 10 and distribute amongst your friends.
I've been a hardened slackware user for some time now but thought I'd give Ubuntu a go as I had heard a lot of good things about it. I have now started rolling it out to some of my users here at work! Things just seem to work in it, eg: I plugged four XBox controllers into my laptop running Ubuntu and they all worked with xmame straight away without having to touch a thing! Saying that, there is no one real best distro out there. They all have their ups and downs, it comes down to personal preference at the end of the day.

Thanks for your input about Ubuntu, but what's your take on the other Linux versions, like SUSE, Red Hat, Debian, etc?
"Use da schwartz"

Remember most of the core code is the same. The differences you see is window dressing and exclusion or inclusion and optimization of certain features. Remember source code is available and you can make it how you want it. Pick one. Most people I know have tried several. I know a person with more than a half dozen in a multi-boot system.

is mitch putting us on? From initial post 9/28 to latest, 10/4, it appears mitch has not ventured onto any of the above suggested web sites.

Thanks wizard-fred, that's exactly what I was wondering! Thanks for answering my question perfectly. Dlonra, I visited all the websites, which I appreciate you guys suggesting, but exactly what I was asking in my last followup was what your opinion was about the other versions of Linux and what the differences were. I'm not "putting you on."
