hi all,
i am really new to Linux, so please excuse me for dumb questions
i have cloned mulinux to my HD to a ext2 partition with LILO as bootloader
i am unable to get a more modern linux because i only have a slow dial-up connection (even DSL will need around 6hrs to download)
my question are,
1. can i upgrade the kernel that comes with mulinux (i.e. mulinuz)with a newer kernel
2. if above is possible, will it add extra functionality to mulinux
3. when i run commands like "make install"
i get "make: no such file" what can i do about this?

i luv DOS

The subject of kernels is a whole topic in itself. Most newbies can't just install a kernel even if they have a good understanding of it. To know a kernel is to know the OS in great detail since there is so much to it. It isn't a newbie topic at all. You can get stock pre-made kernels that might work but then you get other issues. Your best bet is to stay with a distro that is tested before you try compiling or installing kernels.

See Gento pages. They offer a distro that you have to build like everyone once used to. The how to pages are very long and tell about kernels as I recall.

There are other floppy based distros and micro distros. There is old zipslack that you can put on a fat partition. You can order almost any distro for a few bucks all over the world. You can even get free cd's sent.

There might be a linux users group nearby that has tons of info and cd's too.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

Go to Ubuntu or Kubuntu. Click the "Shipit Free CDs" link in the Navigation list at the right. There you can create a Launchpad account, then request a free CD of the 6.06 release to be mailed to you.

Ubuntu and Kubuntu are essentially the same distribution with the exception that Ubuntu uses the Gnome Desk Top, and Kubuntu uses the KDE Desk Top. I have experimented with Kubuntu and I like it almost as well as my distribution of choice, Mandriva which I have used for about eight years. I am particularly impressed with the Ubuntu / Kubuntu user community. Their desire to help and support new users is unsurpassed in the Linux world, and is indeed a focus of the Ubuntu / Kubuntu philosophy.
