USB to Serial Port Converter

I am at present experimenting with Mepis 6 and I have a successful install on a separate drive. I find though that I cannot log on to the Net because I use a USB modem which apparently Linux regards as a WinModem and will not recognise it. I have no serial port on my PC and I wondered whether a USB/Serial converter would do the trick. I have a serial modem but will Linux still see it as a USB modem if I should use such a converter? Alternatively would I be better advised to install a serial PCI card to the PC?

Tell us the brand of modem.
I rather doubt it would be easy. It is pointless to decide how the OS might view the product.
There is a work that allows windows drivers to be used on linux. See NDISwrapper.
Might be easier to remap the printer port as a serial port and get a supported serial modem.
I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you peanut.

It's a Taicom Modem, some years old now but it works well. Since I updated my PC I have no serial port only USB. The thing is that I started with Mepis just before I updated my PC and I was using the Taicom Modema quite satisfactorily at that time. Now I have reinstalled Mepis it will not recognise the USB modem.

USB to Serial Convertors would require a driver, an add-in PCI Serial Card may be the answer!

Thank you all for your advice... seems like the add-in card is the way to go.
