Hi,

I have a 1gb usb flash disk/pen drive. Previously it worked just fine, however about 3 weeks ago I did a quick format on it
in win2k. The capacity went down from 1gb to 750mb. The pen drive continued to work. However after trying the usb script on linux which worked ok for another pen drive, my 1gb has ceased to work anywhere. Windows says its now a usb hub and linux says it is an invalid block device. Both os's refuse to recognise it with windows not assigning a drive letter and linux not assigning the sda1:.

I suspect that the original format somewhow mangled the partitions so that when it was put into the linux box it got mangled some more.

My question, and plea for help, is that since it is electrical, erasable programmable rom memory, is there any way of re-formatting my flash disk/pen drive if the os's cannot recognise. If not how can I get either windows or linux to recognise it ??

Thanks in advance for your help.

Just delete all the partitions (if there are multiple partitions) and format it into fat32.

deleting the partitions and reformatting is exactly what I'd like to do, but both windows and linux do not recognise the device, therefore windows does not assign a drive letter (G:) nor linux a scsi device number SDA1:

How can I get this previously working pen drive to be recognised by any os ???

Thanks Don H.

I was wondering about that to. After roughly 1 month my pen drive went bad, the computer doesnt recognize it at all so I cannot format it or anything.

I've got a 128M USB drive that works fine on all my computers (and scores of other computers), but refuses to work on my HP notebook. Funny thing is, at one time it also worked fine with the HP. One day I plugged it in and WinXP sez: "The USB device has malfunctioned, etc..." or words to that effect.

I reformatted the drive in Fat32. Didn't help at all, but the drive still works on every other computer I stick it into. XP, 98, ME, doesn't matter. Twilight Zone material.

I have got a 128 mb USB pen drive that used to work fine till a couple of days back when the capacity of the drive reduced to 32mb. when i explore the contents of the disk, windows prompts me to format the disk volume. once thats completed the disk displays 2 files
"Ç∩" and "δXÉMSDOS.5.0"
these files have no extention and are 0 kb. i not sure if something is wrong with disk itself as windows recognizes the disk, formatting doesn't work. i cannot locate the software to format the disk as the make is chinese. Is there anything that i could try? i'd be happy to try anything, the pen drive is extremely useful.

Thanx
