I have read so many howto's, help files, and FAQ's about modems and linux they're invading my dreams. Here is my problem:

I just partitioned and installed Red Hat 7.3 (kernel 2.4_18-3) in a dual-boot system with Windows XP. Everything is just fine, except the modem. I am well aware my Generic Soft 56K internal modem will not work under linux, however I also have a Diamond MultiMedia Supra Express 56K USB V.90 (SUP2780) external modem. This is supposed to be able to work in both hardware (i.e. Linux) mode and software mode, with the hardware mode being default.

The linux hardware browser lists it under Modem, and lists it properly. Of course, the Add New Device Wizard keeps stating there is no modem found. I think the problem is because I also have a USB mouse. I can find /dev/usb/ttyACM0, …ACM1, …ACM2, and …ACM3, but don’t know how to find exactly which one of these the modem is on. How can I query which devices are where? And when that is done, how can I get the modem recognized as such at the proper USB address? Minicom does not query the USB ports, so also won’t pick up the modem, also couldn’t find it with Wvdial.

Any suggestions or assistance out there?

That's exactly what I need help with. What command line args do I need to:
1. find
2. query
3. config
a usb modem?

Better yet, where can I find a list and description of the various linux command line args? I have extremely limited knowledge of linux command line, and it has been many years since I've done any command line work at all (and that with DOS).

thanks again

Hi mich,
ok. Firs let presume that your RH 7.3 recognized your modem at bootup time.(First time when you start RH). That doesen't mean that your modem is working under Linux.Sometimes RH recognize the hardware but he don't have a propriate driver for him. So you see there can be driver problem. But if your modem is installed by RH correctly (I do hope that is the case) than he could be installed as a /dev/modem.Run KPPP(program simmilar to Dial-up in MS Windows but more powerful). You can try with setting your KPPP to see if the modem is working as /dev/modem. If not try to change the parameter manualy by entering /dev/usb/ttyACM0 if that don't work try with /dev/usb/ttyACM1 etc.If that doesen't work than you need a driver for your modem.Finding a USB driver for your modem should not be a big problem.
About list of commands type in your shell:xman Thre you can find more description that you will ever need.

Hi nexsus,

Thanks for the advice, I've already tried changing the paramaters manually through KPPP, and no luck. Not found under /dev/modem or any of the ACM*. Guess I'll have to look for a driver.

Big help with the shell commands, much appreciated.

Thanks
