usb devices get damaged!!!

I got my flash disk managed totally 3 days before(about 9 months of use), then I got today my MANHATTAN tablet damaged ( few days ago), what could damage them ?
1- linux
2- windows
3- the front panel USB plugs in COMPAQ pc (work pc)
4- reusing the same device with two different operating systems
5- Devil eye???? actually I can't decide!

some IT friend told me that it is related to my linux, where he said that this is because of linux does not control the voltage going to the device ( depending on device predefined model)

is that real? does usb change the voltage? he told me that mobile chargers are changing the USB voltage to the suitable level of mobile, and so for the Cup heater!!

Please is there an expert can tell me the right truth.

Nothing personal, but I'd say your IT "friend" doesn't know jack about hardware:

Unless one of the machines you used it on is somehow miswired, I'd say you're just having really rotten luck with USB drives. But they're not designed to last forever:
