Since last night I'm downloading the RH8.0 CDs. it is still going.....
So far I always installed LINUX from scratch and had then to reinstall my favorite tools and to move data.
I wonder how upgrade is supported. Any experience with 8.0 or older versions?
Thanks in advance.

I did a clean install to 8.0 this time. However, I am still not sure I like 8 over 7.3. It will be intersting to see what everybody thinks.
In the past I have used the upgrade feature on 7.2 to 7.3 with success.

I have upgraded from 7.2 to 8.0 successfully. There was a small glitch when it couldn't recognise my boot configuration and it displayed error message followed by rebooting the computer. So I backed up my grub.conf and than it upgraded smoothly. After installation xmms stopped working, but it ia all sorted out now with the help of www.xmms.org.

Didn't have any problem upgrading from 7.2
to 8.0 at all (not even a minor glitch :) so
I don't expect any problem going from 7.0 to
8.0 either. Go ahead, give it a try...Lawrence

How to make the upgrade? I tried to find in www.redhat.com the upgrade files, but i can only find the complete package.
Thx
Gil

You need to download the first three CDs and
boot from the first one. Go thru the whole
thing like you would normally do and when
you present a window about installing or
upgrading, pick upgrading, of course... Then,
it will check to see what you have installed
previously and upgraded those packages.Lawrence

I am having 7.3 .. what are the advantages and special features of RH 8.0 is upgrade really needed?? please mention the benefits .. if u have any experience
thanks..

Thanks for the responses so far.
I would love to give it a try, but my download is still working on the first CD......
Any suggestion, where to get a good speed? (I'm in Atlanta,GA) It seems almost all mirrows are on overload or password protected.

Red Hat notes in Ch 4 of 8.0 on their website that it takes 27hrs per CD to download at 58kbps...that's 6 cd's. I coughed up the $39.95 + shipping and had it installed 3 days after I ordered 8.0 from Red Hat. No profit in downloading it as I would still be downloading it, downloading it, downloading it....

You may want to ftp from jungle.metalab.unc.edu
which has a great speed but real hard to get
into (even with 400 max). On the first day
when RedHat Linux 8.0 came out, I found out a
great site, mirror.pa.msu.edu, and it took
less than two hours to download each CD :) I
set the whole thing running that night before
I left the office and when I came in the next
day, all 5 ISO files were on my computer...
Try that site, jungle.metalab.unc.edu, first
if you can get in. Otherwise, give the
Physics & Astronomy Department, pa, at
Michigan State a shot.Lawrence

Lawrence,
This was very helpful. It was still dificult to get in but at least I got it going with the Michigan mirror.Unfortunately the MD5SUM didn't match and I had to do it again. This time I tried cse.buffalo.edu and got 60 min/CD with no errors.
I will try the update this weekend.
Thanks again.
Peter

Hi,
Thank you all for your help.
The upgrade worked fine, using it right now.
Had some issues with the required space. It seems to me that it calculates it wrong. The installations asked me twice to provide more space.
Anyway, the result is very nice.
THank you all for your advise.

I've done a fresh install of 8.0 on a second hard drive. Initially had trouble with nvidia drivers. 8.0 felt fast, though i noticed RedHat cheats a bit and run X at a higher priority (-10) than default (0). Also I liked the idea of gcc-3.2 seeing as I had an Athlon XP and wanted to have an optimized system. The new desktop layout felt more confining than my custom 7.2 configuration, but I don't hold that against RedHat. In the end I decided the upgrade isn't quiet yet worth my time, having to recompile all my local tools and being dependent for a while for vendors to provide 8.0-compatible binaries that I am unwilling or am not allowed to recompile becuase the source codes isn't available. But if you are new to linux, I would say that 8.0 definitely provides a nice introduction to linux. (Disclaimer: I have nothing to do with RH.)
