What problems, if any, can I encounter using the CD for Ubuntu 8.04 to update my present Ubuntu 7.10 system? Will it recognize the fact that I have all the updates and additional programs? Is there a different way of updating from a CD as oppose to doing it through te Update Manager when available?

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, are in my top 10

1. Its never recommended to 'upgrade'.

2. It's never recommended to upgrade a beta over a stable.

Regardless, it could work. Providing you don't have any development on it, you just need to protect your /home directory in case anything goes south.

Now, since you're only 3 days away from release I'd just wait and then you could eliminate one of my points

Well, I wasn't talking about the Beta version. The final release CD is out and I've sent away for it. My post above was in regards to the full released version, again, not the beta version.

Pre-release order maybe? Why wouldn't you just download the ISO when it's ready rather than ordering it? As Jeruvy said, 8.04 hasn't been officially released yet...2 days to go

Probably because they said it would be 4 to 6 weeks before I receive it and I'm sure by that time it will be the release copy. I am not in any hurry to do the upgrade. I was just curious what roadblocks I may hit trying to upgrade from the CD, thats all.

OK, but why not just download the ISO & burn your own CD? Are you on dial-up?

I always advise that you keep about 10 gigs in a partion for your system, thats a safe size. then take all your aditional space and make a /home partition. this way you can do fresh installs without loosing your settings and files.
