If anyone can help I'd be grateful. I run a small home network with a mix of Win2k, Novell 5.1, Redhat 7.2 and other OS's. My problem concerns my flatmate who's a Student Nurse. He needs access to a University server that provides all his course work details and tasks throughout his 3 year course. The problem is that they are all MS and cannot be accessed without the use of a MS OS (95 or above). I'm trying to drop all MS computers in the house but can't due to this problem. There IT support is useless and will just tell me that it's impossible.

You can use other Internet browsers on a windows platform but you can't use any browser on Linux. (Some MS handiwork there perhaps?!)

I want to get round this problem in order to reduce the costs of the computing needs of the Students of the University. This is not for me but several 100 students who are being forced to use MS software which as we all know costs the earth. When your a student on student wages this is a serious issue!

Any suggestions are gratefully recieved.

Then i suppose it doesnt work better with a MAC?

Normally the web is OS independent and then OS you are using should not affect web pages.

Could you give a little more information about the situation and what cause the problem. Is it caused by "file extension" that cannot being read, or by bogus java/javascript/directX script?

I can't get any information as to why whatsoever... thats the problem. All you get is this page come up http://wolf-nt.wlv.ac.uk/(you'll have to be using mozilla or netscape to see what I mean). You can also see that it's got an automatic check box for Computer Type and Monitor Resolution.

You can use Opera to get past this first section on an MS machine, but NOT in Linux!

Hi,

If you take a look at the HP-sourcecode you
will see, that it checkes the IE-version
and then displays errors if it differs from
Internet Explorer. But you can also see
that with passing the browser-check it will
continue to:

http://www.wlv.ac.uk/wolf

Which will redirect you to:

http://asp.wlv.ac.uk/Level3.asp?UserType=11&Level3=88

I can access all the links (using konqueror -
sending no browser ID or anything).
Maybe just try the new link overriding the
BrwoserID check....
Let us know if it helped. Good luck,

Solo

All the probs I have had with sites not opening in Linux but in windows have been due to me not having cookies on.
Have a look round that (Opera seems to be teh worse - sometimes complains about illegally formatted cookie and won't accept it)

Hi,
OK, I spent about 20min on this homepage and
I had to allow Javascript from time to time.
I found that the Main-Homepage is:

http://asp.wlv.ac.uk/Home.asp?UserType=11

the WebAdmin says that IE=>4 and Netscape
are browsers that pass the browserID-Check,
but I used konqueror and I could use the
search option and open links and all.
CU,
Solo

If you fancy a callenge then try and get to this page:- http://wolf-nt.wlv.ac.uk/common_sql/newmodlogin.asp?orgid=wlv&temp=166829369
This is the page where the Uni Students log in and get their information. I have tried just about everything without success. This is the page that I have been going on about.

Good luck to anyone who tries...
