GNOME is not just one package, unfortunatly. It is made up of MANY libraries, from GTK to image libs. You then have all its config packages, system dialogs, etc. Then you have all the Nautilus crap, which also needs Mozilla, odd I know. Then you have all the companion apps, that use GTK.

Its your choice what to uninstall. I suggest you leave GTK and GTK2 in, since many apps (like GIMP) need it. You can remove the gnome libraries, Nautilus, and the Gnome config and desktop packages. That should basically remove gnome, then reinstall them. I know, its a nasty bugger, isnt it.

it is near impossible to really screw up the core files for anything. More likely you have some config files in your home dir that are screwed up. To test this create a new user and check out gnome with that new account. If everything is fine then you other config files are fubared. You can try pruning/deleting files/dirs (the hidden ones starting with .) in your user directory and when you run gnome again the config files should be set to their defaults again.

You may be able to recover your Gnome functionality, without resorting to an uninstall, by

either

deleting the .gnome files in your home directory and restarting your X system

or

start Nautilus
