Ubuntu on some PCs?

OS: XP Pro
CPU/Ram: 1.85 Ghz/ 1 gig

So, I've been trying to install Ubuntu 6.10 onto a couple of different PCs, (Thinkpad T21, and two desktops, one newer 2.3 Ghz, and one older 366 mhz) and none will work. I know that the minimum requirements will be somewhere around 128 mb of ram, and the Thinkpad has that, the others have 256, and 384. I've burned the image as an ISO. All computers are booting from CD. Both desktops won't even boot from it, and the laptop doesn't want to let it install.

What could be the problem here?

Did you CHECKSUM the CD you burnt ?

Min specs are ideally 256MB Mem and a P3 or later. On the older Lappy DSL Linux would be better.........

I did check the MD5 checksum and all was ok.

I have DSL,(live cd) and Slax,(live cd)and Red Hat 6, 7, and 9. I wanted to use Ubuntu because of all the cool add ons like the desktop effects. I've got Red Hat 9 up and running on the 366 Celeron, but I haven't hooked up the ethernet yet. I need to decide if I want to go hard wire, or wifi.

I can't even get the boot screen to show up on the newer PC. There is like a command line, but all it says is a bunch of errors. The 366 Celeron would show the boot screen, then just blank out. And I left it alone like that for about 3 hours, and nothing. So needless to say, it won't run live or install to the hard drive.

Also, I've got the "alternative" cd install also, and that won't go either.

I'm not exactly sure which distro to use, I've just heard and seen alot of good things about Ubuntu. I also have to have a good reason to use Linux. I love using XP, and I love hacking it. I'm not yet into programing or having a server, (yet). I do want to know as much as possible, I've even got a Mac to learn how to use it.

My Dell Latitude laptop so far is the only thing that will run Ubuntu, but I've only tried running it live from the cd. I have too much stuff on that one to repartition it.

If you can not run the live CD, perhaps you
can use the alternative image (an installer
only - no live CD) to install it and see if
it can work for you.

I did not like the Live CD installer when I tried Kubuntu a while back (v. 6.06 I think) and I did the alternative image. IMHO, the alternative installer offered many more options than the Live CD one.
