Which version of UBUNTU have you installed. For example UBUNTU for servers does not have a GUI.

i am using ubuntu server 7.x. And as far as my knowlage is concern i think there is GUI interf for ubuntu server. some buddy told me to download pakages from internet by typing the following command

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

but aftet that mouse pointer come with small CMD prompt screen at upper left corner and rest is of black and gray dotted screen.

Since you installed UBUNTU desktop have you rebooted?

Does the command ask you for anything? Username and Password?

Have you tried the command:startx

yes i rebooted several time and after rebooting it prommt user id and pass in cmd prompt mode and after that i enter startx but the after effect which i faced i have written in RESPoNSE NUMBER 2 message.

and regardless from this topic arochester where you from?

and please anyone send me the comple guide link of ubuntu apart from ubunto.org site.

From the prompt, after you have signed on, try the command: sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg

This should start a text-based wizard. It will give a chance to (re)configure the monitor, resolution etc. Answer the questions you can. If there are questions you can't answer then go with the given default answer. If at first you don't succeed then try again. If you can't get it to start with anything else try Vesa.

Hi There

Thanks for helping me, by the way last night i succed in achiving the GUI. one of my friend helped me. actually the problem is the ganome desktop, we just downloaded the gnome desktop which was we are missing. and it starts working

sudo apt-get install gnome-desktop-environment

And Nice to hear that you are form Scotland
