I am trying to get Ubuntu 7.10 to install on my PC, it is a Athlon 64 Socket 754 system, with 1GB RAM, nVidia GeForce 6600 PCI-E graphics, Realtek NIC (Not sure of the model), onboard Realtek sound, and 2x SATA hard drives. the Motherboard is a Biostar NF61S.
I can't boot the LiveCD at all, it hangs as soon as the mouse cursor shows, unless I Use the acpi=off boot option, but then I cannot use my mouse.
I can get the alternate (text installer) version to install, and it boots up, gets past the boot/splash screen just where it would load up gnome, screen is black, system hangs.
I was on the ubuntu forums, I was told to get the new nvidia drivers from the repository while in recovery mode, then xorg config again, however it cannot resolve the repositories when I try to do that, I don't think my NIC is working even though it detects it, I tried another and it still doesn't work, so any helps would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

It may be that the SATA Controller Chipset is not supported, could you post the OEM Manufacturer of the Chipset ??
Also have you set the SATA Drives to IDE or RAID Mode in the BIOS ??

For giggles, try a couple of different live CDs such as Knoppis, Sidux, and Damn Small Linux to see if they will boot.
Distros sometimes behave differently.

On further investigation, some folks have problems with 64-bit Linux versions on boards with that chipset.
Try a 32-bit Ubuntu version, perhaps 6.04.
