I want to see what Linux is all about. I have a nice laptop that we don't use very often, so I thought I would install Ubunto on it to play with.
My question is are there resources within the Linux community to support the 'function' key, and are there DVD decoders available.
Sorry if these questions are stupid, but I have always wanted to try the Linux platform and this computer is my only option right now

First off, it's Ubuntu NOT Ubunto. Secondly you can visit Ubuntu.com/ for just about any inquiry or tutorial you may need on the OS including support for the "function" key on your notebook, and with regards to DVD decoders - yes there are & you can get tone via programs like Automatix and the rest.

There's also the live CD option if you do not want to install it - but just want to get a hang of it.

you can't do wrong with ubuntu, download the image, burn to disk and boot.

ubuntu will not make any changes on your system, it will run entirely from cd (slow of course). this way you'll see if it works on your laptop, if there are any hardware issues and how it looks like. then you decide whether you want to install (ubuntu only or in a multi boot environment with windows) or not.

ubuntu also offers excellent support through the user forums.

Today's subliminal thought is: 'Calm down ... it's only ones and zeros.'

Yea like Mattie said just download the Distribution (OS). I like Kubuntu because I run KDE, and it's as easy or easier as all that Windows CRAP. Everything works, and you can do anything in Linux as Windows. Kubuntu and Ubuntu are some of the most user friendly versions of Linux availible, and you can boot right off the disk and look at the features.

At the bottom I posted the link to the ISO, a complete disk, ready to burn with something like nero or roxi sp. Make sure you tell your burner software to burn a cd image and just don't paste or copy the ISO to a data disk or in my computer.
