1. The kernel is the main part of the actual linux OS. Everything else runs on top of it.
2. You can run linux in keyboard mode, though it'll be a little more difficult to learn. When it boots up asking for your name and password, type ctrl-alt-F2 (or F1, I can't remember) and it'll take you to a text mode. If you're running redhat linux, log in as root and run Xconfigurator. One of the options it asks is if you want to boot into a graphical system. Unselect that.
