"Compaq had specially adapted BIOS chips which limited the amount of user
change. For a number of years they had the BIOS and bios-utilities set up
on the hard drive in a small partition. This partition is accessible on
boot up by tapping on <F10>. Each Compaq product came with a quick restore
cd (the famous QR cd) which was used, typically, when the hard drive was
replaced to restore the full functionality of the system, including all the
preloaded software. The method you have to use to do this is to fdisk the
drive, removing all partition information and then run the QR cd. You can
purchase the QR cd from Compaq (now HP) for $10 (at least that was what we
were quoting last year when I was doing tech support for them). After you
have done the QR, then run fdisk - but DO NOT REMOVE the 15 Mb partition,
just remove the DOS partition. Then you should be able to install Linux. I
would suggest, if you are going the RedHat route which I have had some
experience with, to use RH7.3 or RH8. Then run the up2date to get the
system current."
