I'm a newbie so bare with me. I installed FreeBSD and it's loaded and I signed in with root. But when I do startx i get the following error:x connection to :0.0 broken (explicit kill or server shutdown). x auth: (argu) :1: bad display name "test-unix.unix:0" in "remove" command
Now of course i labeled this host Test-Unix is the the reason for my issue? I just want to work with x windows or start up KDE and I'm kind of lost.
Thanks in Advance
Lo

I also went into this file XFree86.0.log and it said:
Fatal server error:
no screens foundI don't know if this helps at all?
Thanks
Lo

Have you configured X? Does the monitor act like X is trying to load? Does xf86cfg auto-configure and load X, allowing you to quit and save the configuration? Do you know your video chipset and monitor refresh rates so you can use xf86config if xf86cfg fails?
What version of X, or even FreeBSD, are you using?

No I have not configured X yet? My mouse works? But no GUI comes up. I can see this won't be as easy as redhat:) But I heard so many good things about FreeBSD!!
I don't understand "Does xf86cfg auto-configure and load X, allowing you to quit and save configuration file?"
Well my monitor would be the stand refresh rate I think is 60hz. Let me pop my case to find out what kind of graphics card I have (ATI Rage Pro Turbo AGP). I'm running FreeBSD 5.1 which I think is the newest version? Any help would be appreciated!! Next question would be how can I receive automatic updates to packgaes that are installed on this computer? Is there a utility I can run like apt-get with debian were I can update software manually?
Thanks Again

Also were is the best place to download package for FreeBSD? Like Apache or Postfix or webmin programs like that?
Thanks Again
Lo

Well I answered my own question...
go to the shell and type
xf86config
And this will step you through configuring your graphics and keybwoard and mouse.

I used to have Bsd running with KDE a while back. You can download and install features easily if you installed the Bsd "ports collection". Basically , you go to the ports directory, find what you want , after that run# pkgadd yourpackage
If the selected package is not on your system, it will automatically download and install.

i had those same error messages on redhat 7.1 but i finally got x configurd and now it works fine
