I'd like to set up a triple boot system. Win2k/Linux/DOS6.22 !
I have previously set up dual boot Win2k/Linux OK by installing Win2k first, then Linux but would now like a small DOS partition - I don't mind starting over if necessary. Has anyone simple instructions please ?

Install DOS, then Win2k (which should pick
up the DOS installation and provide a
windoze boot entry for it) and then
GNU/Linux which should detect your windoze
partition.

Thanks 3Dave, I'd done that :-) Trouble is that I want Lilo to handle the DOS boot and NOT the Win2k boot loader. This system is intended for a training suite configuration and I don't want the trainees seeing the "Win2k or DOS" option. I have dual boot (Win2k/Linux)systems with Lilo cut down to 6 secs before defaulting to Win2k - this is just shorter than the time it takes the monitor to warm up so the trainees can't see the Linux option but I know it's there and can quickly hit "down-arrow & enter" :-D

How are your partitions laid out? Post up
the output of "fdisk -l" and your
lilo.conf.... You should be able to create
another entry in lilo.conf for DOS very
similar to the one for win2k....just
pointing at a different partition.

Hi 3Dave, I'm back to square one now... a totally blank machine. My last attempt was to use the Win2k install prog to partition the disk. A 1Gb FAT followed by a 10Gb FAT32 and then continued the installation into the 10Gb partition. All went OK with Win2k. Next I installed DOS 6.2 into the 1Mb partition... rebooted... zilch :-( DOS Setup had stomped all over the boot record ?

Tomorrow... I'll try again ! :-)

DOS first...then win2k. You can still use
the win2k partitioner, just don't run
through the actual install. You could
probably fix what you have now by running
the win2k setup again. You may want to use a
DOS fdisk to create the first partition and
leave the rest blank, then use the win2k
install to create a partition for
that....then the remianing space can be
taken up by slack.

How about using dosemu or dosbox under linux
instead of a DOS install as it would save
you from having to keep rebooting?

I see you are running slackware....do you
use swaret? From memory you should be able
to find it in the extras directory on one of
your slackware CDs "swaret --install dosemu"
should be all you need!

Thanks again 3Dave. I may be causing myself grief for little reason here :-(
The only reason for the DOS partition is so I can run the commands for Norton Ghost from it, instead of having a boot floppy (as I do at the moment) which runs various NET commands, installs the NIC drivers and maps to the main server. Then I create an image of the entire HDD (Win2k & Linux) for distribution to all the other PCs in the training suite - again using the NET/Map etc on the "clients".
It could be just paranoia - I don't want the users finding these commands !
I'm going to try again today, and follow your last advice of DOS first, then Win2k... although I'm still worried that Win2k will screw up the DOS6.2 installation as it did before - it seemed to remove the system files and create a "DOS" folder on C: (Win2k itself was on D:) Well... here goes :-)

From what I remember of windoze, I thought
it creates a boot entry for any previous
versions of windoze 95/98 etc when
installing win2k side by side....I assume it
wwill do the same for DOS.

How about using something like g4l (Ghost
for Linux) or dd/gzip commands by hand
rather than norton ghost?

I've just got to grips with Norton Ghost. I've been happilly using it for a couple of years to clone our win2k setups but hit problems trying to clone this new dual boot setup - their Tech Support said it wouldn't work (tried to sell me a new version) but in fact it did once I'd discovered the "sector by sector" switch !
Finding these days that floppy disks (which Ghost needs to boot from) are very unrelaible so that's the other reason for trying to get a DOS partition on my systems. Presently installing Mandrake... be back soon :-))

You could always make a bootable CD by using
the ghost floppy image....

I gave up... but...

Once I'd found boot.ini I edited it so that the timeout is 3 secs and I deleted the text "MS-DOS" so the user won't see that option when booting Windows. The system now boots and shows the Lilo screen with Linux or Windows, choosing Windows briefly pops up the Windows boot loader screen and if I want DOS I just hit down-arrow enter :-) DOS loads and runs my Ghost commands. Thanks everyone.
