Any tips on how to most effectively
install XP, 98SE and Linux on same
PC.
At present I have only XP up and running.

I have Partition Commander with System Commander Personal Edition. SCPE will manage up to 12 operating systems, but, the boot partitions must be primary (not logical in extended). Regular SC will handle up to 255 operating systems.

My setup is Win98se and Mandrake Linux 8.1 Powerpack. Linux is installed AFTER SC is installed. This is so lilo/grub does not get written to the MBR, at least with Mandrake.

As far as XP is concerned, all I know, is that I won't touch it, due to WPA and forced 2 year upgrade policy, not to mention .net, etc.

Between windows 9x and linux, it is best to have them on different hard disks. If XP doesn't require itself to be on mobo first hd, then a third hd for that one.

I have 4 60 gig hds, with 1 for linux. 2 are on a promise ultra100 eide controller card.

Win98se is on mobo primary master and linux is on mobo primary slave.

The other thing, is that you HAVE to make sure that ALL of your hardware is compatible with the linux distro of your choice. Mandrake 8.1 Powerpack Edition cost me about $75 from staples.com, total, and I can install it on as many computers as I want, with no additional OS fees. Plus, it comes with over 2,300 applications. Your greatest headaches are going to be modem and video card. Winmodems don't work. External modems, like the ZOOM 56K work just fine. Video card depends on distro: redhat supports least amount of hardware, while SuSe and Mandrake have best hardware support.

Go to www.linux.org and start reading up and checking out the various distros for the one that suits you.

Have fun and don't pull too much hair out. [grin]

Hi,

I use lilo which starts graphical (640x480 and
16 colors). It supports everything ! I have
a Menu (in the picture) where I can choose
from which partition I want to boot. It also
supports password-authorization for special
partitions (windoze for example since it is
highly insecure) and it is small enough to
fit into the MBR on the harddisk. The picture
is loaded from the linux partition after BIOS
is loaded. Here is my lilo.conf:

lba32
boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hda1
install=/boot/boot-bmp.b
bitmap=/boot/boot-image.bmp
prompt
bmp-table=144p,80p # x,y coordinates for the menu
map=/boot/map
delay=300
# vga=9
vga=0x317
append="apm=on"
default=Linux

image=/vmlinuz
password=*******
label=Linux
read-only
restricted

image=/vmlinuz.backup
password=*******
label=Backup
read-only

other=/dev/hda3
password=*******
label=DOS
# restricted

Have fun,
Solo

I have the same problem with installing XP and Linux on my PC. First i have installed XP and then Linux and as my bootloader Grub. Then i only can boot Linux. There was no sign anymore from XP, disappeared...Of course it was still on my harddrive. When i fixed my bootrecord with the recovery console from the XP cdrom, i got back my XP, but no sign of Linux anymore, disappeared...:)
My option was to boot linux from a floppy disk, still doing that. So, is there anyone who get it worked with XP and Grub????
