hi,
I've tried nearly all distros, could find any
that fit my finger properly...
I'm quite experienced with linux (in think)
and I want a distro that uses the rpm package
management by default, is quite small to
download, is without all the extra clutter -
no need for configuration programs, is
uptodate (unlike stable debian, or STALE
debian rather), would be good if the install
cd contains X windows and gnome...
I really don't need any office applications,
games or even irc or icq clients. I
calculated that a distro would be quite small
to download if it only has the base linux
progs, xfree86, basic things of gnome, and
mozilla. I am too lazy to build my own system
from scratch...I don't like compiling
programs myself, it takes too much time!
Is there any nice little distro, about 400 mb
iso image that meets my needs?

hmm...
Peanut Linux may do the job nicely.
I haven't the foggiest clue where to download it though, look on www.linux.org and look in the Distro list for it.

I can't think of a name right now, but I do know that there are .rpm based small, stripped versions of RedHat available.Have a look at www.distrowatch.com
I switched to Conectiva 8 a few weeks ago and I really like it.
It uses .rpm packages, apt-get (great !, We have an up to date mirror here in Holland, Brazilian mirrors are very slow...), and a really good install where you can choose from about 20 different install types ranging
from just a base system to a full workstation and/or server setup.I'm not sure but I think you only need the first Conectiva cd for the basic installation types.
So if you think RH is nice but too bloated and installs too much stuff even on a "minimal install", then try conectiva, it's a kind of "Redhat Light"

hey i found a really nice distro it is a maintenece geared distro but im sure you could modify it for your needs it runs x all that other whoohaa your talking about and its only like 40 something it can be installed on a hd and comforms to rpm package management
its saved my a** before so i figured id give it props
http://www.linuxcare.com/bootable_cd/
this is the site i found it on has a nice database of distros
http://www.elinux.com/articles/distros/min_flop.jsp well l8r

lookup microkernels
or systems like qnx
they are tight and compact
took two (2) minutes to install on a pII 300mhz
boots up imediatly
some microkernals are so stiped down fit on three floppies
