This is more of a "huh" type of question - so bear with me.

I recently upgraded from Edgy Eft to Feisty 7.04 Beta (but far from a Windows type of Beta though) & on logging on today got a banner about some crash that the OS claims may have happened now or in the past - how lovely, I guess I'll have to settle that by flipping a coin ;-)

I chose to have the error reported after all I'm trying to be a contributing participant in this beta deal. That option then returned an Opera dialog with the message below verbatim.

Problem in Opera

The problem can not be reported:

This is not a genuine Ubuntu package

So what gives anyone - is this a snafu or something since no one pirates Linux?

Give it up for MC Rove

Hi

Opera which is popular among Linux users is actually considered to be closed source. I do not know the exact details of bug tracking done by Canonical during the beta stages of their releases but I can see them only wanting to log the bugs directly related to the packages included with the release or in their supported repositories. I just checked all the Feisty repositories ( Canada ) and Opera is not listed.

There has been several kernel updates etc to the Feisty beta recently and broken packages and worse can be expected. There has also been a lot of posts on the Ubuntu forums in regards to issues after upgrading from Edgy to Feisty. Also Kubuntu Feisty is not as stable on most systems as Ubuntu Feisty ( Gnome ). Also if you have a Nvidia based video card you may run into issues on both versions. I am sure they will get the issues resolved by the time it is released or shortly thereafter. A clean install is usually your best bet as opposed to upgrading ( esp with Edgy and Feisty ).

Keep an eye on the ubuntu forums for any opera posts and in particular the kubuntu forums. Nothing against Kubuntu ( I run it on another system ) however I do find it has more issues with hanging apps etc than Ubuntu. I put up with those issues as I really like the ability to customize it and the huge amount of apps available for it.

Thanks for the response.

I do have an Nvidia 6800, and maybe I should have explicated the move from Edgy to Feisty a little better - but I didn't think a lot of folks had issues going the in-place upgrade route. Ironically I did too on my initial attempt, and consequently went for a full install since I do not use the Linux environment for any production activity on this system & had nothing on that partition to lose.

If I must add, I never had as much as an issue with Edgy overall, I had Synaptic, Adept & I made use of Automatix quite often to expand the tools available to me. For now I have not re-added Synaptic but I already have Automatix put on the Feisty installation.

Before finally settling on Kubuntu I tried out more than a handful of distros & I'm sure there's probably something better suited to *my personality* with all the plethora of distros out there.........LOL

With this install, I've noticed a couple of unexplained quirks, one for example is within the appearance-settings console. The KDE Theme Manager is stuck on Kubuntu 02 - a few other themes are there but there's no way of switching to any of them. I have adjusted to the less intuitive nature of doing things that remain the status quo in Linux but I must confess it does get me fuming sometimes all the trouble one has to go through to get simple things accomplished a lot of times.

Normally after such incidents I tend to take a vacation from the OS to maintain my sanity before returning to it usually after a few weeks.

By way of explanation, Opera is a
proprietary program. It is not Open Source
Software, or licensed with the GPL. This is
the reason no report can be made for it. It
is not actually a part of the Ububtu /
Kububtu distribution. It may be available
for use with the distribution, but it
belongs to Opera Software ASA.

Since Ubuntu / Kubuntu does nothing but
package it for use with the distribution (or
it may have been packaged by a third party)
and they have no access to the source code,
they have no right or ability to try to fix
it.
