Hey guies,
what are the best media players for Linux according to your experience?

I've been using MPLAYER and XMMS for quite some time. Also tried my hands with XINE. Is there anything better than these, the ultimate dream of a music lover?

I use amaroK for music and mplayer for video.

amaroK has neat features like downloading album covers and lyrics and tracking listening habits. It keeps an internal database and sorts by ID3 tag info rather than filesystem hierarchy.

mplayer supports nearly every format imaginable and has keyboard shortcuts for just about anything you'd want to adjust while the video plays.

I use mplayer most of the time. Sometimes (g)xine if I want DVD menu support. Ogle is quite good for DVDs too. My mate swears by vlc.

Alternatives to xmms I've used are beep-media-player and mpg123/mpg321 which is text based. I also sometimes use workbone which is a text based audio CD player. A friend of mine recommended juk (which comes with KDE 3.4) which apparently is great if you have loads of tracks and big playlists.
